Things to do in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Khao Lung National Park boasts the highest peak in Southern Thailand at 1825m. This beautiful park has a number of hiking trails, cool streams and waterfalls as well as luscious orchards bearing fruits such as rambutan, mangosteen and papaya. Thais here practice a unique tradition of shade farming which is sustainable farming at it’s best. Wildlife here is abundant and as well as numerous bird species, there are said to be over 300 varieties of orchid, some of which can only be found here.

The City Wall & Gate

History dates this impressive wall and gates to the early 14th Century.

Wat Phra Mahathat Temple and Museum

This is the most important and biggest Wat in Southern Thailand. This sprawling complex, features a 78m high Chedi, crowned by a solid golden spire and surrounded by 173 smaller chedi. According to legend, Queen Chala and her brother Prince , brought relics and bronze statues to the temple, where they built a Pagoda to house them.

Shadow Puppet workshop

This area is famous for it’s manufacture of shadow puppets. They are made from dried buffalo hide and you can see a true master at work when you visit Khun Suchart or Mesa Chotiphan workshops. Puppets can be purchased here and you might even be lucky enough to see a show.

Getting to Nakhon Si Thammarat

By car

Take Highway No. 4 on the Bangkok-Prachuap Khiri Khan-Chumphon route and then Highway No. 41 past Surat Thani-Thung Song until arriving in Nakhon Si Thammarat or Amphoe Phun Phin in Surat Thani, then take Highway No. 401 along the coast to Nakhon Si Thammarat, total distance of 780km.

From Bangkok Nok Air and Air Asia

By train

There are rapid and express trains departing from Bangkok Railway Station to Nakhon Si Thammarat 12-14 hours.

By bus

Regular and air-conditioned buses depart from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal.
